Henry ‘Almit’ Breuer was born November 3, 1935, in Elbowoods. He grew up on the Fort Berthold Reservation, where he rodeoed, ranched and farmed his entire life. Breuer is an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes.

Almit started riding exhibition bareback horses for $3.00 a head and steers for $1.00 a head at the Sanish Rodeo when he was just 9 years old. He married Marlyne Bayer in 1953. They had three children.
In 1954, Almit began competing in the NDRA, riding bareback, saddle broncs and bulls. Over the years, he competed in every rodeo event.

He first joined the NDRA in 1954 and went pro, joining the Rodeo Cowboys Association in 1956. He went back to the NDRA in 1958 to stay closer to home and won the saddle bronc championship in 1954, 1955, 1960 and 1962 and the NDRA all around in 1960.

Almit began bulldogging and team roping in 1962. He won the steer wrestling in 1965 and maintained an NDRA membership from 1955 1974. One week after Joe Chase rode Whiz Bang, Almit rode him, too.

He went to auctioneer school in 1961 and won the ND Auction Market Buckle and set the record in Montana for the largest oil lease tract auctioned.

Almit served as a director and a saddle bronc representative to the NDRA, as president of the ND High School Rodeo Association, member of the ND Stockmen’s Association for 45 years and director of the Fort Berthold Cattlemen’s Association.

He died July 10, 2021.
